It’s all good.
11 January days completed, imperfectly.
I haven’t arrived at the register with the appropriate number of reusable bags, yet. I’ve run back to the car while a line formed behind me (sorry), I’ve shoved apples, oranges and other items into my pockets, and I’ve piled everything back into the cart and let a variety of groceries roll free in the way-back of the car. (like how we used to ride in the car as kids)
Thank you for the stories of arriving to the checkout counter without your reusable bags. I was able to quickly recall these back-up plans, when needed, and as a result didn’t waiver at all in my not-so-epic conviction. (inconvenience is quite helpful for getting better at remembering on the way into the store)
An expected byproduct of sharing this not-so-epic goal is that what started out as a personal resolution, has become a goal shared with Jason. He’s rocking it! And we’re doing even better by collectively reducing our acceptance of plastic bags. Plus it’s fun to have another human to high-five after you’ve carried handfuls of produce and really cold, frozen tater tots to the car AND it’s a million degrees below zero.
Sadly, we can’t claim 11 days = zero plastic bags. One new bag did make it into the house. It was tied around a paper bag, protecting our Thai take-out. We didn’t have a strategy for this scenario. Doh! Our take out menus now have “ask for no plastic bags” written next to the phone number. We’ll see how this works out. (any other suggestions?)
That’s it. Imperfect and better than hoped!
This one may possibly seem less epic than the original not-so-epic goal. But I’m thinking it has a more global impact than my tidy room. And it’s takes up space in my noggin and I catch myself wishing I’d get better about it, so I’m just going to claim it here and hope, that with some luck, support, and preparation I can make myself a new habit in a month or two.
My goal: to stop taking plastic shopping bags at stores. In the big picture, I’d like to reduce all of my plastic consumption, but will start with one discreet activity – accepting plastic bags.
I’m curious to see how many days in a row I can muster. I don’t remember the existence of plastic bags when I was growing up, so I feel good about the odds of surviving and being able to figure out alternatives when needed. I’ve got my accumulated reusable bags ready to be loaded into the cars. I’ve got a back up plan: I’ll take several trips to the car with whatever I can carry when I forget my bags, rather than make “this-one-time” exceptions.
Right now I’ve got motivation, which I’m sure I will resent at least a few times, but here it is in writing. Just not going to take anymore plastic bags. That’s it.
Day 1 is going well. I haven’t left the house.

5 weeks ago I declared my not-so-epic new year’s goal…”just trying to have a clean chair.”
I’m obnoxiously proud that the chair is still clothing-free, and has been for all 35 days!
What’s been surprising about this not-so-epic goal though is how much I’ve learned about myself.
The first week was really, really hard.
“I was too tired to hang up my clothes.” “One day of clothes on the chair wasn’t a big deal.” “I was being anal, what difference did it make if I had a messy chair?” “I didn’t have enough time to put my clothes away.” “It wasn’t going to last, so what difference did it make?”
I was surprised by how little I believed in myself. I was also surprised at how much unsupportive chatter I had in my head – around something that I wanted. The amount of effort it took to talk myself into believing that I wasn’t actually too tired to hang up a belt was remarkable.
The second week was like new love.
After adding hangers to the closet (so there were actually enough to hang my clothes) things got easier. And after years of Saturday mornings spent cleaning my bedroom, I suddenly I had nothing to do. I found time! (This never happens.) By not making the mess, I didn’t have to clean it up. I’ve heard myself say this to my kids – It works! I basked in this glory, for days.
The third week it became infectious.
With my extra Saturday morning time, I cleaned out the home office. I emptied the overflowing in-box that held bank statements from March 2015 on, various school projects deemed worthy of saving, report cards, and a wide variety of other papers that were waiting to be filed. In this case, the filing cabinet itself was a problem. There was no room. Once the files were purged of their ancient artifacts, there was room enough for everything that we actually wanted to save. The in-box has been empty since.
The fourth week I saw a pattern.
I was far more likely to put something where it belongs if I didn’t put it in a “pile” first. Throwing my clothes on the floor led to picking them up. Putting them on the chair gave me a sense that they were “handled.” Putting papers into an in-box felt “handled enough” so there was never enough motivation to file them. A-ha!
I had a hunch that this might apply to the piles in the kitchen. The piles were just enough to ease the discomfort of “messy” but they took away the discomfort I needed to actually deal with the clutter. (This A-ha! felt like unlocking the genome)
The fifth week I got bold.
I de-piled the kitchen. It’s been clean for 5 days. This is a bigger, maybe-a-little-epic goal since there are 4 other pile makers here. But I feel more confident, armed with what I’ve learned from my chair. And my internal chatter is far more supportive.
The lesson: little successes can lead to new perspectives, capacities, and challenges.
But back to the chair… I’m so proud of my chair. Every time I walk by it, I smile. It makes me happy because it was impossible and really I’m genuinely surprised it’s clean, every time I see it. (like groundhog day)
Of course without the clutter, the lack of upholstery on the chair is becoming a thing.
In contrast to the great adventures and glorious feats of strength that I have planned for 2016, I have this chair.
Although, it looks like a benign bedroom chair, it’s not.
This is my attempt at a new tiny little habit.
What you can’t see in this picture are the sweaters, skirts, slacks, blouses, and tights that wanted desperately to rest here on this chair, this week. I am very proud of my empty chair.
I’m trying to build a new habit in a small aspect of my life. I just want to make a small change that I might be able to sustain. Not revamping anything major, just trying to have a clean chair. And although it’s been really challenging, I’m on day 7.
I was telling a friend about my chair project and she asked me how I did with last new year new habit. (last year’s?) I felt a little embarrassed that I didn’t actually remember what it was. She reminded me that I was trying to bring in the mail and sort it over the recycling bin, so I had less clutter on our kitchen counters.
Oh, that habit! (I totally forgot.)
But the day before, I watched Jason come into the house with the mail and sort it over the recycling bin and only put the important pieces on the counter. I forgot…he and I had talked about it. I guess we both adopted the habit and now it’s such a part of our routine, we can’t see it or remember the effort it took to develop it. It just happens. It’s a habit.
(How cool is that?)
So, I’m working on building a new tiny little habit. It’s not tremendously exciting or anything. It won’t ever get tagged as #epic, but looking at my empty chair makes me feel pretty happy and accomplished.
